Spray foam roofing — also called SPF roofing — is a seamless, monolithic roof system applied as a liquid that expands into a solid foam layer, then gets coated with a protective elastomeric or silicone top coat. The result is a roof that insulates, waterproofs, and reflects heat simultaneously. No other roofing system does all three.
How SPF Roofing Works
The process starts with cleaning and preparing the existing roof surface. In most cases, there's no need for a costly tear-off — the foam adheres directly to metal, concrete, wood, BUR, TPO, EPDM, and most other substrates. The foam is sprayed in lifts to the desired thickness (typically 1–2 inches), creating a seamless membrane with no joints, seams, or fastener penetrations where water can enter.
After the foam cures, a protective top coat is applied. This coating shields the foam from UV degradation and provides a durable, walkable surface. The coating comes in white or light colors that reflect solar heat — turning your roof from a heat sponge into a heat shield.
Why Oklahoma Buildings Need SPF Roofing
Oklahoma's combination of extreme heat, hail, high winds, and driving rain is brutal on conventional roofing. Seams split, fasteners back out, membranes shrink, and the building owner pays for repairs year after year. SPF roofing eliminates seams entirely. The monolithic foam layer absorbs hail impact without puncturing. And because the foam is adhered — not mechanically fastened — wind uplift resistance is superior to most conventional systems.
The insulation value alone can justify the investment. A 1.5-inch SPF roof adds R-10 to your building envelope — often doubling or tripling the roof's existing insulation value. For Oklahoma businesses running AC nine months a year, the energy savings are substantial.
SPF Roof Maintenance and Longevity
A properly installed SPF roof can last 30+ years with periodic recoating every 10–15 years. The recoating process is simple and cost-effective — clean the surface and apply a new top coat. Each recoat extends the roof's life another decade or more, at a fraction of the cost of a full re-roof.
Is SPF Roofing Right for Your Building?
SPF roofing is ideal for flat and low-slope commercial buildings — the structures that struggle most with conventional roofing in Oklahoma's climate. If your current roof is leaking, poorly insulated, or due for replacement, SPF may be the most cost-effective long-term solution.
